The Finance function provides business partnering, management accounting, financial planning, financial accounting, systems accounting, risk management, corporate reporting and transaction processing to all areas of Ofsted, including responsibility for the on-boarding process for contracted Ofsted Inspectors.

The Finance Officer role will have the responsibility for: processing all of Ofsted’s financial transactions; producing the Annual Report and Accounts ensuring integrity of Ofsted’s balance sheet; and developing our financial systems and processes.

The Apprenticeship:

You will undertake a fully funded Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification in AAT. Over the 18 months of the apprenticeship-training programme, you will develop skills and knowledge that will support you in a wide range of duties.

Every 6 to 8 weeks, you’ll have one-to-one sessions with a tutor to get you thinking about how to apply the learning to workplace scenarios, allowing you to build up a useful portfolio of tools and techniques.

Over the duration of your apprenticeship, you will spend a minimum of 20% (1 working day) of your time at work completing off-the-job learning.

When you start the apprenticeship, you will be allocated a tutor to help you make the most of the training programme.

Eligibility Criteria

This role is open to graduates and candidates should NOT hold or have equivalent or higher qualifications in this field (AAT Level 3). We are particularly interested in your aptitude, enthusiasm and your potential, along with a passion for pursuing a career in public service. It is important that you do not already have the skills, knowledge and behaviours that the apprenticeship is designed to deliver.

To apply for this programme you must as a minimum requirement have:

• English and Maths at level 4 or above (grades A-C).

The key responsibilities of the role are outlined below. However, this is an overview of the role and is not exhaustive. Ofsted reserves the right to assign other duties appropriate to the B3 APT grade as required.

• Produce monthly management information to provide assurance on the effectiveness of our financial controls, highlighting issues and making recommendations for improvement.
• Perform the regular checking processes around taxable benefits, highlighting potential compliance issues and providing advice to inspectors on how to report taxable benefits to finance.
• To produce timely reconciliations of transactional data sets to ensure the quality of the information we input into our systems and provide to our stakeholders.
• Providing support for users of our finance systems, through regular monitoring of help requests, providing solutions where appropriate or escalating them to senior Finance Systems colleagues.
• Producing the monthly and quarterly reports on expenses, prompt payment performance and significant transactions. Engaging with our external communications to ensure this information is published on Gov.Uk in a timely manner.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels.
• Ability to plan and prioritise own workload in order to meet tight deadlines, and complete tasks accurately without close supervision.
• Able to work with large data sets and analyse information quickly and accurately.
• Able to use Microsoft office packages effectively particularly Excel.

Ofsted operates a hybrid working approach, allowing colleagues to benefit from time in the office, with the flexibility also to work from home. Our expectation is that you will spend at least 60% of your time working in your office, or at external meetings or events. The exact balance will depend on the nature of your role and the suitability of your home environment, and will be discussed and agreed with your line manager.
